Killer Whale!!!

The killer whale is not actually a whale at all. Also known as the orca, or blackfish are mammals are the largest species of dolphin in the sea. As seen in the movie “Free Willy”, these giant dolphins are most well known for their black body with large white spot around the eyes and lower jaw. As well as their colors, orcas are equally as noticeable for their dorsal fin. The dorsal fins on male orcas average at about six feet. (That is taller than the average human) Orcas at adult size range from nineteen to twenty six feet weighing in at around six tons. Female orcas are generally a few feet smaller and a ton or so lighter than males. The largest killer whale on record was thirty-two feet and over twenty two thousand pounds. These humongous dolphins give birth to single calves about eight feet and 500 pounds. The large size of this animal gives way to huge appetite.
Their name was given to them because of there hostile feeding strategies, and habits. Killer whales are most defiantly killers. They fare commonly classified as the wolves of the sea. They hunt and travel in packs called pods in order to fill their stomachs with an average of 500 pounds of food a day. They feed on a wide variety of animals, however some pods feed specifically on certain types of prey. These “prey specific” pods will revolve their migratory patterns around those of the food source. In my opinion orcas diets and feeding habits are the most amazing. They will feed on anything from herring and Salomon to larger fish such as tuna and sharks. Killer whales frequently hunt thresher, mako and even hammerhead sharks. Killer whales also feed on mammals as well. Killer whales have been found hunting and feeding on whales, sea lions, seals, and other dolphins. Killer whales have even taken it upon themselves to hunt and prey on the largest mammal in the world, the blue whale. The feeding habits of the killer whales are more amazing and diversified than any other animals in the world.
